Chapter 7 – Separated Lives

Marie awoke groggily. She was baffled to find Nana in her hotel room filling her monogrammed suitcase on the unoccupied side of her king-sized bed. Although she had just awakened, Marie felt as if she hadn’t slept the entire night, and commented this very fact to Nana who regarded her curiously. Nana swept from the closet to the bathroom as she collected clothing and toiletries, which she arranged neatly in the suitcase.

Nana continued to glance at her curiously, but she didn’t cease her hurried packing, “I don’t think we will have time to order room service. We’re going to have to wait until we get on the plane to eat.”

Marie, still in her nightgown, strolled over to the balcony to admire the sun’s emblazoned brilliance in the horizon. She fingered the scarab necklace her papa had bartered for at the caravanserai. Maybe this morning they could go back to the Khan el-Khalili to shop, or maybe they would tour the Pyramids of Giza.

When she said this, Nana stopped packing and regarded her suspiciously, “You know we’re going home. Don’t you remember anything from last night?”

Marie raised a hand to her face as if to shoo away the fog that had descended over her brow. She fought to remember something very important. “Aunt Rachel?”

Nana tensed as she snapped, “Stop that! Stop that right now!”

Marie sobbed, “But I don’t know...” and then she did remember just a little bit. Her mama had changed her papa. And he knew because she accidently said...

“Hush!” Nana scolded. “No sense crying now that the damage is done.” Then the older woman sat on the edge of the bed as she began to cry too. “Poor child, what is she going to do when he divorces her...what is she going to do?”
